Introduction
There was a time in my life when I could go for an easy 10-15 mile run and not think anything of it. I could also play a full 90-minute soccer game or 9 innings of hard-nosed baseball and would feel like a million bucks afterwards.
About 4 years ago I seriously injured my Achilles tendon in a soccer game. I didn’t rupture it, but I also couldn’t walk on it for a month and was unable to even do a simple calf raise.
After that injury “healed”, I knew my Achilles was practically shot. My 10-mile runs were now dropping to 4 with a stop every 10 minutes to vigorously stretch and massage my poor beat-up Achilles tendon. I tried everything: rolling, massage, ice, tape, and deep stretching. While all of these things helped, it was a difficult routine to keep up with, especially when I only had about an hour a day to squeeze my exercise in because, like everybody else, I am extremely busy.
Now that you’ve listened to my Achilles injury sob story (sorry about that) let me introduce you to the Bauerfeind AchilloTrain Pro.
I actually only discovered this product about 4 months ago, and it was completely by accident that I came across it randomly while browsing the Bauerfeind website.
If you’re like me, you probably didn’t even know that there were supports and braces available for Achilles injuries. Sure, you’ve probably tried different types of compression sleeves or ankle braces to help the issue, but nothing truly targeted towards the actual tendon in question.
Comfort/Functionality
If you’ve ever consistently worn Bauerfeind before, you know how great the quality of the compression material is. The comfort of anything I’ve ever worn from them is second-to-none, and as soon as you use their gear you can quickly tell that its not your average compression material.
But one of the best contributors to the comfort level of the AchilloTrain Pro is also one of its most important features in terms of functionality as well. For this reason, I’ve chosen to amalgamate the two. The magnum opus of this brace is its “visco-elastic pad,” which surrounds the Achilles tendon in a comfortable embrace to keep it supported. But the level of comfort it gives doesn’t stop there.
This may sound strange, but the rubbery pad on the back of this brace actually massages your Achilles tendon using strategically placed nubs and grooves as you move. This is almost something that you have to feel to believe, but I can sincerely tell you that the comfort level of this brace is on another level. And a large part of this glowing comfort review is due to the feeling of massage it gives you that keeps your Achilles feeling loose and relaxed.
Functionality Continued…
Another key point for this review concerning the AchilloTrain Pro is what else the “visco-elastic pad” does for you. It’s really important to note that it really envelops the entire tendon and contours perfectly to any shape of leg.
It also has “wings” on both the bottom and top part of the pad that envelops your muscles as well to help with the transition of energy between the tendon and the calf muscle/foot as you move. In layman’s terms, this just means that the support on this brace is wide reaching and targets the muscles around the tendon as well to keep everything working as it should.
Trust me when I say that this product is a complete game changer, and don’t be surprised when you’re able to start running/jumping/playing/working out much easier without Achilles flare up immediately after you start wearing it.
I do not hesitate to say that this product is definitely in my top 3 for all braces and supports I have ever owned. I’ve given it this extremely high honor because it is A) so unique in what it offers (who thought they would see a support for their Achilles that actually works?) and B) Because it does exactly what it says it will do- and more. Personally, it has allowed me to start doing things that were simply too painful or uncomfortable before I had it, so I am extremely grateful for that.
Drawbacks
Functionally, there are no drawbacks for this product that I have found yet. It is durable and does what it claims to do.
But, like all other Bauerfeind products, the AchilloTrain Pro is a little hard on the wallet. HOWEVER, it would be unreasonable to expect that you could get away with getting an athletic support of this quality and functionality for a low price. As I have said before, I only review the best products on my site that I truly believe will change lives. This is one of those products, so I implore you not to stress about the price too much. Like my other Bauerfeind products, this is one of the best investments I have ever made.
Sizing
An extremely important thing to not overlook when getting this brace is SIZING. Please, do NOT just guess your size for this product and hope for the best if you’re buying it online. If it’s too big, I can guarantee you it won’t work properly and you won’t get the benefits, and it it’s too small it’ll cut off the circulation and be really uncomfortable for you.
I know it’s annoying, but please get a tape measure and measure the area a couple inches above your ankle properly, and then check for your proper size on the Bauerfeind website.
Final Thoughts
The bottom line is that the AchilloTrain Pro by Bauerfeind is a must have for anybody dealing with Achilles tendinosis. It reduces swelling, helps limber up your tendon, and massages the muscles. A must have!
